Maybe it was a little over the top just 20 years ago but unfortunately, the crime rate has soared in recent years as times have become more mad and erratic. It’s no wonder that more and more folks in the 21st century are including outdoor security cameras into their kit of home security measures.

Such security features do not mean that we have to be paranoid about crime but quite the contrary. The better our home security is the less we have to worry about it.

A friend of mine who lives in London, woke up one morning and opened his closet to chose a shirt for the day. We assumed he was robbing the place when he heard my friend come home and chose to hide in his bedroom. It really shook my friend up, and needless to say, it wasn’t long before he got an alarm and an outdoor security camera fitted as a deterrent to other would-be burglars.

On my last visit to the UK, I couldn’t believe how much home security there was compared to my previous visit just 10 yeas before. Almost every house you walk by triggers a security light which floodlights the whole area around it. There are also alarms on every second building. Many Brits are also replacing standard doors and windows with double and triple lock reinforced options. As if all that little lot isn’t enough, outdoor security cameras are being installed to many homes across the country too.

One security measure the British don’t have to defend themselves with is the firearm. It’s still illegal for anyone to keep a gun in the home no matter how high risk the area or threat of invasion. Obviously there are licensed gun holders for the likes of farmers, hunters, and hobbyists, but no one is allowed a firearm as a means of personal protection.

Outdoor security cameras are for more than just viewing who’s knocking at your door. They are also used for panning the outside areas in general. Many parents find this a useful feature as they can keep an eye on the kids while they are playing outside without having to physically go out and check on them every 5 minutes. The harsh reality is that in this world which seems to see an increase in weirdoes, children can and are snatched from their own yards so outdoor security cameras really do come into their own here.

Like most technology, the cost of home security has come down in recent years and the outdoor security cameras are no exception. Just hop online and you’ll be presented with an abundance of cameras to suit all pockets and what’s more, most are pretty easy to install.

Some of the more sophisticated outdoor security cameras have an infrared option which enables you to see what’s going on in the dark. However, if, like our British friends, you have a security light that triggers when an intruder comes into the secure area, then infrared is not really necessary.
